Thierry Breton on Ukraine

Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, declared his active work to transition European defense industries into a “war economy” mode to increase and accelerate weapon production for Ukraine. This commitment, shared with the High Representative, involves mobilizing European industry to provide necessary materiel for Ukraine, both immediately and over the long term, regardless of future political developments. He stressed the necessity for member states to approve contracts that facilitate the transfer of this increased ammunition and equipment to the Ukrainian forces on the ground.

His position is closely tied to the new European defense industrial strategy and accompanying program, aiming to strengthen the industrial readiness of Europe while deepening cooperation between the European and Ukrainian defense sectors. He emphasized that collective firepower, not just political statements, is required to counter Russia's current high pace of militarization. This push for a wartime industrial footing is presented as essential for defending European values and ensuring long-term stability in the region.
