Han Dong Hoon on Impeachment

Han Dong Hoon, as the leader of the ruling People Power Party, ultimately reversed his initial opposition and urged his party members to support the impeachment of the president following the short-lived martial law declaration on December 3. He defended this break from the president, who was once his close ally, by stating that defending the illegal martial law would be a betrayal of the country and that the president posed a great danger to democracy. This decisive stance led to his resignation as party chair on December 16, 2024, as it caused a final rupture with the pro-president faction within the party.

His support for the impeachment motion represented a significant shift, as he had previously opposed the move, citing concerns about adding to national confusion. However, after the president demonstrated no intention of resigning early and following the military's mobilization, Han concluded that an immediate suspension from duty was necessary to protect the people and the constitutional order. This action, which led to the resignation of most of his party's supreme council members, solidified his position as a critic of the president’s actions and marked a deep division within the conservative movement.
