Eric Schmidt on Future of AI

Eric Schmidt asserts that the coming Artificial Intelligence era will be a very big deal, likening its transformative potential to the enlightenment or the impact of the printing press, though compressed into a much shorter timeframe. He believes AI is wildly underhyped, envisioning an explosion of opportunities across healthcare, energy, and productivity, potentially leading to annual productivity increases of 30 percent across all businesses. He notes that the arrival of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and subsequent superintelligence is the most important event in human society in perhaps 500 to 1,000 years, and it is happening within our lifetime.

He also stresses the sobering challenges, particularly the geopolitical competition between the United States and China, which he sees as defining this area, noting that the technological gap has shrunk significantly. Furthermore, Schmidt warns that AI development faces significant energy limitations requiring government assistance to secure the necessary power, and that open-source proliferation poses dangers, with bad actors potentially exploiting powerful models for cyber, bio, or autonomous weapon threats. He strongly advises that everyone, from artists to business leaders, must learn to use AI to remain relevant against competitors and peers.
