Nigel Farage, leader of the Reform UK party, has outlined a hardline policy aiming for the mass deportation of asylum seekers who arrive in the country illegally. His plan, dubbed “Operation Restoring Justice,” centers on the principle of “detect, detain, deport,” with a specific focus on stopping small boat crossings across the English Channel. A key component of his stated strategy is to unilaterally withdraw the UK from the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and repeal or disapply international treaties, such as the Refugee Convention, to remove legal barriers to deportation. He has explicitly stated that anyone arriving without authorization will be detained upon arrival and deported, promising this would happen “period.”

This position has drawn significant criticism from legal experts and rights groups, who argue the proposals would dismantle centuries of British legal tradition and potentially violate absolute bans on torture by sending people to unsafe nations. Farage has suggested he is prepared to negotiate returns agreements with regimes such as the Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, which has generated particular alarm. While his party claims the measures will save substantial public funds and solve the border crisis within days, critics contend the practical implementation is unworkable, lacks funding detail, and would involve paying authoritarian governments to accept returns.
