Angela Merkel on Political Ideology

Angela Merkel, a member of the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), was known for carefully cultivating the politics of the center during her long tenure as Chancellor. She strategically adopted policy prescriptions from the center-left, sometimes borrowing from the playbook of figures like Tony Blair and Bill Clinton, to forge a “center-right Third Way.” This approach was aimed at bridging the political middle ground and simultaneously containing opposition from both the far-left and the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD). However, this centrist maneuvering sometimes led to disillusionment among traditional conservative CDU voters, who felt she had drifted too far left, citing decisions like the phase-out of nuclear energy and the embrace of refugees in 2015 as key examples of this perceived shift.

Her tenure was characterized by a pragmatic governance style, often summarized by the slogan “TINA” (There is no alternative) during the Eurozone crisis, which suggested a limited room for ideological maneuvering based on perceived economic necessity and European obligations.
